Bring The Whole Family
White Sands Hotel is Waikiki’s most dog-friendly boutique hotel — welcoming dogs of all sizes with no weight limits, private lanais on every room, and direct access to the Ala Wai Canal Trail.
Planning a trip to Waikiki with your dog? White Sands Hotel is one of the few hotels in Honolulu that genuinely welcomes pets — not just tolerates them. We’re a boutique hotel built in 1957, steps from the beach, with a pool, a swing bar, and a no-nonsense pet policy: dogs welcome, all sizes, up to two per room.
No weight limits. No breed restrictions. Just bring your dog.
Traveling to Hawaii with a dog requires advance planning, paperwork, and strict health requirements. Hawaii is the only rabies-free state in the U.S., which means pets must follow specific vaccination, testing, and documentation rules before entering the islands. If you’re planning on bringing your dog to Waikiki, here’s exactly what you need to know.
The Hawaii 5-Day-Or-Less Program allows qualifying dogs to bypass the standard 120-day quarantine and be released in 5 days or fewer. Most dogs traveling from the mainland qualify — but the paperwork must be completed correctly and in advance.

Private Lanai on Every Room
Every single room at White Sands Hotel has its own private lanai — a covered outdoor balcony where your dog can get fresh air without you having to leave the room. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference when you’re traveling with a pet.
Direct Access to Ala Wai Canal Trail
White Sands Hotel sits right next to the Ala Wai Canal, one of the most popular walking routes in Honolulu. The trail runs about 1.5 miles along the canal and is perfect for morning and evening walks with your dog. Flat, shaded, and always busy with locals — your dog will love it.
No Weight Limits, Ever
Most hotels in Waikiki that allow pets have weight caps — typically 25 to 50 pounds. White Sands has none. Two dogs, any size, any breed. We mean it.
Small Hotel Energy — No Chaos
With just 94 rooms, White Sands doesn’t have the lobby traffic of a 400-room resort. Quieter hallways, easier check-in, and a courtyard setting that doesn’t feel overwhelming for a dog who’s had a long travel day.
Ala Wai Canal Trail
A 3.9-mile flat loop along the canal, right outside our door. Popular with locals morning and evening. Bring water.
Kapiolani Park
Wide open green space at the base of Diamond Head, a short walk from the hotel. Dogs welcome on leash. Grassy areas perfect for fetch.
Fort DeRussy Beach Park
Dogs are welcome on leash in the park areas, though they are not permitted on the beach sand.
Waikiki Beach Promenade
Best before 9 AM or after 5 PM. Dogs aren’t allowed on the sand, but the walkway is open and the ocean breeze is worth it.
Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline
20 minutes from Waikiki. Rugged coastal trail, dramatic views, no crowds. Dogs welcome on leash.
Maunawili Falls Trail
A lush jungle hike on the windward side of Oahu ending at a waterfall. Dogs are allowed on leash, but expect muddy conditions after rain.
Yes — while dogs are not permitted on most beach sand areas in Waikiki, the neighborhood is surprisingly dog-friendly. Sidewalk promenades, shaded parks, outdoor restaurants, and scenic walking paths like the Ala Wai Canal make it easy to explore the area with your dog. Many boutique hotels, including White Sands Hotel, welcome pets and provide easy access to nearby walking routes.
